The Three Types of Petals You’ll Choose From

Fresh Rose Petals: These will cost you the most — not just because they’re fresh, but because they involve stripping the roses just before showtime.

On the upside, they’re all-natural and biodegradable. But because they are bio-degradable, they also break down fast — sometimes so fast they don’t look that great by the time your guests hit the tables. You’ll need to get them the day of the ceremony, and sometimes just before. One more disadvantage: fresh rose petals can stain clothing and linens, and also be slippery.

Freeze-Dried Rose Petals: They won’t cost you as much as fresh, but they cost more than silk. In many ways the best of both worlds, freeze-dried gives brides a lasting alternative to fresh, with most of the visual charm (after all, they are real petals!). You can also order freeze-dried petals several weeks before the wedding, avoiding one more last-minute task for the bride or her helpers.

Silk Rose Petals: They’re usually much cheaper, and they’re also perfect for indoor use. Affordable as they are, they’re perfect when you need large quantities for indoor pathways or table decorations. One caveat: if you plan on purchasing silk and can’t see them in person, get a sample from the retailer before ordering in bulk. Silk petals vary tremendously in quality, with the cheapest ones looking like the economy products they are: thin, transparent, unconvincing and uniformly-sized, which tips off the eye.

Don’t waste your money on shabby silk petals. Quality versions should vary in size, just like real petals, and be made of a microfiber peach silk, which gives them the texture and weight of the real thing.

How Many Petals?

Now that you’ve decided where and what type of petals to use, you’ll need to figure out how many to buy. Here’s a guide:

Silk Rose Petals
Tossing: 100 petals per 6 to 8 guests
Table Decor: 100 petals per 1 to 2 tables decorated with centerpieces
The Aisle: 100 petals covers: 1 square foot (dense), 2 square feet (moderate coverage) or 5 square feet (light coverage, like a scattering of petals)
The Flower Girl: 100 to 200 petals, depending on how she tosses them and how long the aisle is.

Real or Freeze-Dried Rose Petals
Quantities vary, but on average you’ll find 25-35 petals per cup (as in a measuring cup) of real or freeze-dried rose petals. But since both real and freeze-dried petals vary in size, actual petals per cup can vary also.

Tossing: 1/3 to 1/2 cup per guest
Table Decor: 2 to 4 cups per table with centerpiece (depends on the density you want)
The Aisle: 8 cups per square foot (dense), 4 cups per square foot (moderate coverage), 2 cups per square foot (light coverage), 1 cup per square foot (scattered look)
The Flower Girl: 4 to 8 cups

The Secret to Beautiful Freeze-Dried Petals

Using freeze-dried petals at your wedding involves some minor prep work. The easiest way to soften them is to set them in the bathroom while you take a shower. While they’ll never get as soft as fresh petals (so don’t expect that!), humidity will make them softer, more pliable and even brighter. The longer the petals are exposed to moisture, the softer they’ll get.

If environmental humidity is normal to high, the softening process can take place over a few days. But if the air is dry, your petals could harden up again if you try to rehydrate them too soon.

We recommend having your petals shipped 2 to 4 weeks in advance so they’ll look their best. As tempting as it might seem, don’t purchase freeze-dried petals months ahead of time just to have them crossed off your list. Many fade over time, especially when exposed to light and humidity.
